The Corner Market was founded in 1962 by Carl and Lois Janes at the corner of Blacksmith Hill and Charleston Pike. The original structure was a three-room farmhouse that had little more than an improvised deli case, limited assortment of dry groceries, an ever-present barrel of salt fish, cold beer and soda pop. The store quickly became popular with local residents as the last stop on the way home, and a place where customers would be greeted by name. Over the years, the products offered were expanded to include Lois’ homemade potato salad, Carl’s famous sandwich spread, hand-dipped caramel apples and freshly picked locally-grown sweet corn and vegetables in the summer.

The original building was torn down in 1972 to make way for a small, but modern structure and expanded again in 1977 to a total of 10,000 square feet. Throughout its evolution, and even though the name changed, the spirit of the original Corner Market remained and the store stayed true to its humble beginning - a place where people knew you by name and offered good products at reasonable prices.
